Five tips for starting your home project
After years of helping homeowners turn their ideas into reality, Tom has learned a few things that save our clients time and stress when it comes to starting a home project. Whether you’re doing a renovation, extension, or a new build, here are his top tips:
1. Start with “why”
Before you pick tiles or paint colours, get clear on why you’re doing this. More space? Better light? Improved layout? Every good project starts with a purpose.
2. Budget for the boring bits
Planning fees and drain surveys aren’t glamorous, but they’re essential so include them in the budget.
3. Don’t fear the Planning process
Planning isn’t there to trip you up. It’s about good communication and clear information so the planners and your neighbours understand what you’re trying to achieve. Knowing Guernsey’s planning policies and the right questions to ask is where we come in.
4. Be realistic
Always have a contingency budget and a time buffer.
5. Build your team early
Architects, engineers and financial advisers do their best work when they’re engaged from the outset. Get them involved early.
Once you’ve got these things in place the process can become creative, exciting and genuinely rewarding.
