Les Jonnes is a fictional design concept imagined in response to Guernsey’s high cost of living and the departure of the island’s young people.
Oliver Coupe, who has completed a BSc in Architecture at the Welsh School of Architecture, designed the development and presented it to members of the Development & Planning Authority and the Committee for Housing during his work placement with us.
The fictional development, called ‘Les Jonnes’, which translates as ‘the young’ in Guernsey French, would aim to provide affordable housing for young people, foster community and encourage social interaction.
Les Jonnes includes two, three-storey buildings with seventy dwellings and communal outdoor space. Internally, the development includes clusters of 4-6 private studio flats with a small living area and bathroom linked to a communal dining and living area.
The communal scheme offers a 25% increase in the number of dwellings compared to traditional flats in the same footprint.
